PRIMYCIN (cas 113441-12-6), a mixture of macrolide antibiotic agents, on treatment with nucleophiles is transformed in a reversible reaction into water-soluble compounds with the same molecular weights as that of the starting materials. Detailed 2D NMR spectroscopic studies of the separated components revealed that the new compounds, named “pseudo-primycins”, are formed by a unique C35 → C37 ring expansion via translactonization.
