Statolon has been shown to induce, both in mouse cell tissue culture and in the whole animal, a virus inhibitor that possesses the properties of interferon. Species specificity is observed with statolon-induced chick and mouse interferons.Interferon production induced by statolon in chick tissue culture continues for at least 10 days upon daily addition of statolon after harvesting the previous day's fluid. The daily output diminishes until the seventh day when it begins to increase again. A single injection of statolon protects mice against MM virus infection for two weeks.
