A sample of pitchblende from Congo was found to contain (4±1) × 10−15 grams of 147Pm per kg of ore. The 147Pm/U ratio in the pitchblende was (3±1) × 10−4 disintegrations per second per gram of uranium. The observed 147Pm/U ratio in the pitchblende was in agreement with the 147Pm/U equilibrium ratio in non-irradiated natural uranium. The results indicate that the 147Pm in African pitchblende is produced predominantly by 238U spontaneous fission.
