Different strains Pseudomonas andropogonis and P. andropogonis that were previously known as “P. woodsii” and “P. stizolobii”, were grown in liquid culture and tested for the production of rhizobitoxine and hydroxythreonine (cas 21768-45-6). Out of 21 strains examined, 17 produced rhizobitoxine and all produced hydroxythreonine. We conclude that production of both of these compounds is a general feature of P. andropogonis, and is consistent with the synonomy between P. andropogonis, P. woodsii and P. stizolobii. The capability of such a wide range of P. andropogonis to produce rhizobitoxine has far-reaching implications in understanding diseases of plants caused by this organism. The association of hydroxythreonine with rhizobitoxine extensively throughout P. andropogonis is circumstantial evidence for the existence of a biosynthetic relationship between these two compounds, as has been postulated previously.
