Addition compounds between 4-Methylmorpholine (cas 109-02-4)-N-oxide (MMNO) and some lanthanides (III) and yttrium (III) nitrates

The compounds show a general formula Ln(NO3)3·3MMNO. They are hygroscopic and present similar colour patterns to those of the respective lanthanides, but less intense. They are insoluble in acetonitrile, benzene, ethanol and methanol. X-ray diffraction indicates five types of patterns, with two isomorphous (La, Ce and Nd, Gd) and three with different non-related patterns. Infrared spectra show that the ligand is bonded through the NO group oxygen and that the nitrates are also coordinated. The visible absorption spectrum of the neodymium compound was determined, the parameters nephelauxetic (β), covalent factor (b1/2) and Sinha’s (δ) calculated and indicate the electrostatic character of the bonds. The europium emission spectrum (77 K) with a large number of peaks, contain more than one symmetry centre and may indicate the existence of polymeric species. Thermogravimetric curves registered at 5 and 10 °C min−1 in N2 and air atmospheres show that the compounds are stable up to approximately 200 °C and that residues, obtained at ca. 900 °C, correspond to lanthanide oxides.
