SummaryA method for the specific estimation of methylamine, ethylamine, orn-propylamine in biological fluids is described. The oxidation of the amine by a purified amine dehydrogenase from Pseudomonas AMI is coupled by phenazine methosulfate to the reduction of 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol which is measured spectrophotometrically at 600 mμ. The limits of the method are 10–140 mμmoles of amine. No deproteinizing, extracting or distillation procedures are necessary, and the method is very rapid. High concentrations of secondary amines inhibit the reaction. No calibration curves or standards are necessary.
