α-(Trifluoromethyl)phenylacetic acid (1) was synthesized in good overall yield starting from the cyanohydrin of ααα-trifluoroaceto-phenone, via hydrogenolysis of α-mesyloxy-α-(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetamide or ethyl α-mesyloxy-α-(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetate followed by acidic hydrolysis.
