A protein fraction which cleaves linoleic acid into 1-octen-3-ol and 10-oxo-trans-8-decenoic acid was isolated from a mushroom extract by precipitation with poly(ethylene glycol). This fraction was incubated with linoleic acid in the presence of either gaseous oxygen-18 or water containing the isotope-18. The oxygen in the 1-octen-3-ol originates from the vapour phase. There was some evidence that the oxygen of the carbonyl group of the 10-oxo-trans-8-decenoic acid also originates primarily from the gaseous oxygen but that it is then exchanged with the oxygen in water.
