Reaction of [U(Cp*)2(Me)2] with HPPh2 was the best route to the uranium(IV) diphenylphosphide compounds [U(Cp*)2(PPh2)2] 1 and [U(Cp*)2(PPh2)(Me)] 2. Thermolysis of 2 afforded the ortho-metallated complex [U(Cp*)2(PPh{o-C6H4})] 3. Reduction of 1 with KH gave the first U(III) phosphide K[U(Cp*)2(PPh2)2] 4.
