Meso and racemic 1,4-dihydroxy-2,3-dibromobutane reduce polarographically, with half-wave potentials which differ by 0.2 V. Meso and racemic 1,4-dinitroxy-2,3-di-bromobutane also give waves for bromine reduction which differ by 0.3 V, as well as waves for nitroxy ester reduction ; at low pH, there is additional reduction which is ascribed to reduction of nitrous acid.
