α-Methoxymethyl ketones via aldol reaction

Paraformaldehyde in a methanolic solution of KOH converts ketones into α-methoxymethylated and α- hydroxymethylated products. The method was tested on nine steroidal ketones. On prolonged treatment the ketones formed are reduced to alcohols.
