We have determined the surface pressure vs area (π-A) diagrams for three 11-thioalkyl undecanoic acids, where the alkyl groups were hexyl (C6), decyl (C10), and eicosyl (C20). Both the C6 and the C10 compounds displayed features which are interpreted as a compression followed by a lifting of the sulfur, which results in a straight vertical chain (toothpick) as the final configuration on the water. The C20 compound spreads initially in the toothpick configuration. Attempts to anchor the sulfur on the water with Cd2+, Mg2+, and Fe3+ were ineffective. The 11-thioeicosyl undecanoic acid could be compressed to the greatest surface pressure before collapse. All three compounds gave nearly the identical minimum area, ca. 20Å2/molecule. Integration of the work done to compress the compounds from the maximum area to the minimum yields 2.7 ± 0.2 kJ/mole for C6 and 2.9 ± 0.4 kJ/mole for C10; the work required to lift the sulfur off the water is estimated to be 1.0 kJ/mole for C6 and 1.5 kJ/mole for C10.
