Enzymes are good alternative to chemical catalysts for polymer syntheses in terms of high region- and stereoselectivity and environmentally benign reaction conditions. In particular, for the synthesis of functional polymers, enzymatic process will not cause undesired reactions such as ring-opening of epoxy group without using protection–deprotection reagents. Lipase is the most widely used enzyme in the industry since no cofactor is required and the enzyme can maintain reactivity for multiple runs. In addition, immobilized lipase can be easily recovered and reused. Besides polymer synthesis, various enzymes can be used to modify plant oil by catalyzing oxidation, reduction, and transesterification reactions. Therefore, enzymes are versatile tools that can be applied in plant oil-based polymers.
