Chapter 5 - Copolymers and Block Copolymers in Drug Delivery and Therapy
-
Add time:08/21/2019 Source:sciencedirect.com
Copolymers and block copolymers are employed widely in drug delivery applications from the development of sustained release products to smart polymeric delivery systems such as stimuli-responsive polymeric systems, for example, thermosensitive, redox-sensitive, photo-sensitive, enzyme-sensitive etc. Their increasing use in drug delivery science is attributed to their chemical composition, higher stability in different media, and biocompatibility. Nanoassemblies from amphiphilic block copolymers are a promising approach as nanomedicine platforms for cancer diagnosis and therapy due to their relatively small size, high drug loading capacity, controlled drug release, in vivo stability and prolonged blood circulation. This chapter also emphasizes different aspects of copolymers and block copolymers such as their types, as well as recent advances and novel applications. Furthermore, this chapter provides an outlook on future developments of copolymers and block-copolymer-based assemblies in the field of polymeric nanomedicine.
