Antimony trioxide and bismuth compounds added to chloroparaffin-polypropylene mixtures display different fire retardant ‘synergistic’ mechanisms. Antimony-chlorine ‘synergism’ depends on SbCl3 evolved from the mixtures on heating, which is a much more efficient flame poison than HCl evolved from the chloroparaffin in the absence of Sb2O3. Bismuth-chlorine ‘synergism’ derives from a condensed phase mechanism which involves the reduction of the rate of pyrolysis of the polymer which supplies the fuel to the flame.
