The photochemical decomposition of trace amounts of methylmercury (II) chloride in aqueous solution by ultraviolet light irradiation was studied. This may be an important environmental pollution problem. Methylmercury (II) chloride was decomposed and transformed to mercury (I) chloride, metallic mercury, ethane and monochloromethane. The initial decomposition reaction was CH3HgCl →hv ·CH3 + ·HgCl and first-order kinetics.
