Edrophonium is a rapidly reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It is most often used in diagnosis of the neuromuscular disease myasthenia gravis (i.e., the Tensilon test). It can also be used to reverse the effects of neuromuscular blocking agents typically used as an adjunct to general anesthesia and to facilitate endotracheal intubation. Edrophonium is an indirect cholinergic agonist (i.e., it inhibits acetylcholinesterase to transiently elevate synaptic acetylcholine levels at both muscarinic and nicotinic subtypes of receptors).
