Aes studies of the interfacial cross-linking of the chromium(III) fumarato coupling agent in the formation of the aluminum-polyethylene composite film☆

Chromium (III) fumarato coordination compound (Volan 82) has proved to be a very successful bonding agent for the adhesion between metal and low density polyethylene. When an aluminum foil was treated with Volan 82 and laminated with low density polyethylene by extrusion coating, the composite film possessed extraordinary water-resistance and durability, in this research, AES sputter depth profiling was used to investigate the possible formation of the interfacial cross-linking of the coupling agent during the extrusion coating of polyethylene to the aluminum foil. The formation of the interfacial cross-linking of the chromium (III) fumarato coupling agent under extrusion conditions may significantly contribute to the excellent aluminum-polyethylene adhesion in the composite film.
