In this chapter, different multicolumn simulated moving bed (SMB)-based processes that are employed to handle multicomponent separations are discussed. The pseudo-SMB Japan Organo (JO) process, which is a two-step process used to separate ternary mixtures, is addressed. The mathematical model used to obtain the appropriate operating conditions is presented. The application of the JO process is illustrated for the separation of a mixture with sucrose, fructose, and betaine. The multicolumn countercurrent solvent gradient purification used in the chromatographic purification of biomolecules from complex mixtures is also discussed. Moreover, sequential multicolumn chromatography, applied in separation problems associated with biopharmaceutical downstream processing, is presented. All these processes take advantage of the simulated countercurrent movement between the fluid and the stationary phase to improve process efficiency.
