A simple, convenient and general method has been developed for the synthesis of α-aminonitriles by a one-pot three component condensation of aldehydes, amines and trimethyl silyl cyanide in acetonitrile in the presence of a catalytic amount of La(NO3)3·6H2O or GdCl3·6H2O.
