Sodium acifluorfen (CAS 62476-59-9) is a nonselective, pre/postemergent contact herbicide used to control annual broadleaf weeds and grasses. Sodium acifluorfen belongs to the diphenyl ether group of herbicides, a group of herbicides that includes lactofen. In the environment, sodium acifluorfen and lactofen degrade to acifluorfen. Reacting 2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylphenol with 2-nitro-5-chlorobenzoic acid produces acifluorfen. Agricultural uses of sodium acifluorfen include application to soybean, peanuts, rice, and strawberries. Residential uses are limited to spot applications to sidewalks, driveways, and patio areas. General population exposure to sodium acifluorfen is by spot application, which can cause inhalation and dermal exposures, resulting in irritation to the skin and eyes. Frequent repeated skin contact can cause an allergic reaction in some individuals, but this type of exposure is typically observed only in occupational settings.
