Studies of the stability properties of 2-docosylamino-5-nitropyridine (cas 117088-74-1) monolayers have shown that three-dimensional structures are formed from the monolayer material over a wide surface pressure region between 2 and 25 mN m−1. Constant surface pressure relaxation experiments are analysed on the basis of the nucleation growth theory. Under all conditions the experimental results are described by the instantaneous nucleation mechanism with edge growth for the 2D/3D transformation process. This is different to the progressive nucleation so far observed for the other amphiphilic monolayers.
