Physical properties of tissue-conditioning materials as used in functional impressions

Controlled tests on the physical properties of four tissue-conditioning materials were conducted. The findings point to the advisability of leaving the tissue-conditioning materials used for functional impressions in the mouth for an interval of time ranging from 15 to 45 minutes, and then removing the impression. If left beyond 60 minutes, accuracy of reproducing detail may be diminished and any free standing material, such as on a border, will begin to slump.Wilson and co-workers,8 in discussing the soft acrylic resins, concluded that a material used for functional impressions should be plastic while one used for tissue conditioning should be soft and resilient. They state that these properties cannot be present in the same material and, therefore, a product which is said to be suitable for both functional impressions and tissue conditioning has properties which are far from ideal for either purpose. However, this study indicates that tissue-conditioning materials do have the essential properties of a satisfactory impression material if working casts are poured promptly.
