The relevance of dicarboxylate anions and dicarboxylic acids in biological and industrial processes requires that such species are easily detected and quantified. In this regard, the research about synthetic receptors, which can offer a straightforward analytical signal, has produced significant advances in the last decades. This review describes the different structural approaches followed to achieve an efficient interaction between the receptor and the dicarboxylic species. A comprehensive revision of the literature has been made which covers the results published up to early 2014.
