A Brønsted-acid catalyzed tandem annulation reaction of o-ethynylanilines, aldehydes and nitriles was reported, affording functionalized tricyclic pyranoquinoline derivatives with excellent functional groups tolerance. 4-Quinolone derivatives could be generated in the reaction of o-ethynylanilines and aldehydes. The reaction featured with remarkable advantages such as ready availability of the starting materials, free from transition metals and excellent chemoselectivities.
