The aim of this article is to give an overview of the coordination chemistry of beryllium. The unique properties of the Be2 + cation, due to its extremely high charge density, are emphasized and a comprehensive overview of complexes with the most common donor ligands is given. Additionally the alleged extreme toxicity of beryllium and its compounds is addressed and the currently proposed biochemical mechanisms are discussed.
