Two blue fluorescent 1,8-naphthalimide derivatives (fluorescent brighteners) having an allyloxy group have been investigated as modificators for polystyrene. It has been found that the monomeric fluorescent brighteners take part in the radical polymerization and are covalently bound to the polymer chain yielding fluorescent side-groups in the polystyrene. The basic photophysical characteristics and photostability of monomeric and polymeric fluorescent compounds are discussed.
