Effect of planting-date and application method on Ancymidol (cas 12771-68-5) response of hybrid lilies

Ancymidol (cas 12771-68-5) [α-cyclopropyl-α-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5-pyrimidinemethanol] was applied to commercially pre-cooled bulbs of Lilium cultivar ‘Gold Nugget’ at 0, 0.25, 0.5 or 1 mg per bulb as a bulb dip prior to planting, as a soil drench at planting or at shoot emergence of 2–3 cm. Bulb dips resulted in more than twice the height reduction obtained using soil drenches and required only 0.25-0.5 mg ancymidol per plant for effective height control. Senescence of lower leaves occurred, but appeared commercially acceptable at lower rates. Final height was not affected by the timing of soil drenches. Flower number and days to flower were not affected by the application method or ancymidol rate. Bulbs of Lilium cultivars ‘Gold Nugget’ and ‘Enchantment’ were planted monthly during the spring months. Soil drenches of ancymidol were applied to each crop at 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 or 1 mg per bulb. Regressions for final height of ‘Enchantment’ were similar for March and April plantings in response to ancymidol, with the response for May plantings slightly greater. The final height of ‘Gold Nugget’ was generally similar among plantings made in March through June. Flower number and days to flower of the cultivars were unaffected by ancymidol rates, but bulbs flowered more quickly for later plantings. Flower number of ‘Enchantment’ was not affected by planting date, but later plantings of ‘Gold Nugget’ produced fewer flowers.
