Relaxin is a peptide hormone, and is secreted during pregnancy in mammalian species. The relaxin family peptides consist of seven peptides: relaxin-1, relaxin-2 (relaxin identified only in human and apes), relaxin-3, and four insulin-like peptides (INSLs) – INSL3, INSL4, INSL5, and INSL6. All peptides share high structural similarity with insulin due to the presence of six Cys residues, which confer two interchain and one intrachain disulfide bonds. Relaxin widens the pubic bones, softens the cervix, and facilitates labor. Relaxin actions are also found in non-reproductive tissues such as the brain, kidney, and heart in vertebrates. Relaxin enhances angiogenesis and is a potent renal vasodilator.
