  • Utilisation of N-Acetyl-L-glutamine (cas 35305-74-9) during long-term parenteral nutrition in growing rats: Significance of glutamine for weight and nitrogen balance

  • Add time:07/17/2019    Source:sciencedirect.com

Utilisation of acetyl-L-glutamine was studied in growing rats receiving total parenteral nutrition for 15 days. The rats were divided in four groups of 5–8 animals and supplied with an isocaloric nutritional regimen. To all four groups 0.6 g N kg−1 day−1 was given as essential aminoacids. Group 1 did not receive any additional amino-acids, while group 2 was supplied with additional 0.4 g N kg−1 day1 as essential amino-acids. Group 3 received additionally 0.4 g N kg−1 day−1 as acetyl-L-glutamine and to group 4 additional 0.4 g N kg−1 day−1 was given as a mixture of non-essential amino-acids. As percent of group 4, weight gains were 46, 71 and 83% for groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively; nitrogen retentions were 34, 63, and 82%. Plasma amino-acids were higher in groups 1 and 2, who received only essential amino-acids, than in those receiving acetyl-L-glutamine or non-essential amino-acids. The daily urinary excretion rate of acetyl-L-glutamine in group 3 was 21% of the infused amount. The results indicate that acetyl-L-glutamine may be used for an intravenous supply of glutamine, which can be utilised very efficiently for protein synthesis.
