Acid catalyzed alkylation of 4,4′-dihydroxydiphenyl ether with isobutylene gives rise to two isomeric tetraalkyl derivatives (I, II). The oxidation of the symmetrically substituted derivative (I) occurs with elimination of the ether oxygen. The unsymmetrically substituted isomer (II) yields by oxidative coupling a trinuclear phenol (VI), which is further oxidized to a stable mono- and biradical.
