Publisher SummaryThis chapter discusses the analytical profile of methoxamine hydrochloride. Methoxamine is a synthetic aminobenzyl alcohol derivative, active as a directly acting sympathomimetic amine with a prompt and prolonged pressor action which results almost exclusively from a-adrenergic receptor agonist activity to increase peripheral resistance. The drug is indicated for the treatment of hypotensive states when it is desired to raise blood pressure without cardiac stimulation. It is mainly used to support blood pressure during anesthesia, including anesthesia by heart-sensitizing anesthetic agents. The drug has also been useful in terminating episodes of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia. Because of its relatively pure a-receptor agonist activity, methoxamine belongs to the therapeutic category of the adrenergic rasopressor agents and it is similar to phenylephrine in pharmacological actions.
