Escherichia coli 5 s RNA was reacted with 1-cyclohexyl-3-(2-morpholinyl-(4)-ethyl) carbodiimide [14C]methoiodide in the presence of magnesium ion. The RNA molecule seems highly compact in that most of its bases are inaccessible to the carbodiimide. However, the uridine residues in two sequences, UpApGp and ApCpCpCpCpApUpGp, are more exposed and available to reaction with the reagent, which throws light on the conformation of the RNA molecule.
