3.12 - Amino Acid-Based Receptors

The development of synthetic receptors is a classic field in supramolecular chemistry. Many of the known receptors comprise building blocks that have no direct counterpart in Nature. In addition, there exists another class of receptors that either contain amino acids as subunits or are even fully assembled from amino acids. These receptors are structurally related to natural systems, and their molecular recognition properties are biomimetic in the sense that the backbone peptide groups or functional groups, in the amino acid side chains, engage in similar types of interactions with substrates as found in proteins or peptides. In this article, a selection of amino acid-based receptors is presented to illustrate the potential of this approach. These receptors are classified according to the main functional group in the respective amino acid subunit responsible for substrate recognition.
