This chapter deals with [4 + 2] anionic annulation of activated ortho toluates and ortho tolualdehydes. The activating groups belong to esters, cyanide, nitro, sulfones, sulfoxides, thioacetals, etc. Based on the activating groups, the annulations have been subclassified as the “Schmid annulation” and the “Hauser-Leusen annulation”. The Schmid annulation involves ester activated toluates whereas the Hauser-Leusen annulation encompasses sulfoxide- and sulfone-activated toluates. Their reactions include acceptors like acrylates, allenecarboxylates, vinyl ketones, nitroalkenes, etc. providing an access to substituted naphthalenes with defined patterns of the substituents. The Hauser-Leusen annulation has proved useful in the total synthesis of natural products.
