Synthesis of p-xylene by hydro-cracking of Ditolylmethane (cas 1335-47-3)☆

A study was made of hydro-cracking of commercial ditolylmethane on a cobalt-molybdenum catalyst.Conditions of hydro-cracking to form chiefly p-xylene were: temperature 450°, pressure 50 atm. Under these conditions a p-xylol yield of up to 17% of the catalysate was obtained with an overall conversion of ditolylmethane of up to 65%.
