The preparation of alumina from a precursor - basic aluminium carbonate (NH4Al(CO3)(OH)2) - gives high-porosity aluminas after calcination, when a large amount of gases from the carbonate decomposition are liberated.Basic aluminium carbonates were prepared from aluminium nitrate or aluminium sulphate and the influence of hydrothermal treatment on both products is analysed.
