Expedient synthesis of Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes contriving the general molecular formula [M(L1)2Cl2] have been exemplified, where L1 = 4-((3-ethoxy-2-hydroxy benzylidene)amino)-N-(pyridin-2-yl)benzenesulfonamide. The structural feature of the complexes has been deduced from elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic moment, thermal analysis, IR, Far IR, UV powder XRD and EI mass spectra. The structure of the Sulpha pyridine Schiff base has been confirmed by single crystal XRD. The fluorescence quenching of the complexes with alizarin dye has been probed in DMSO using fluorescence spectroscopic technique. The free energy change of complexes (ΔGet) has been intended by Rehm-Weller equation. The complexes have been screened for in vitro antibacterial and cytotoxicity towards human breast cancer cell line (MCF 7) and cervical cancer cell line (He La).
