Therapeutic Administration of Fibronectin: Current Uses and Potential Applications

Fibronectins are high molecular weight glycoproteins present in body fluids and tissues that facilitate cell-to-extracellular matrix adhesion. Fibronectins are integrally involved in cell growth, differentiation, and migration, and therefore, fibronectins play important roles in numerous biologic processes. Clinical trials of fibronectin administration for selected human disorders have been conducted and suggest a beneficial effect of fibronectin in promoting corneal wound healing and in improving the clinical status of critically ill adult patients. The potential role of fibronectin as an immunothera- peutic agent in neonates with sepsis is discussed.
