Three new Schiff bases have been synthesised from the reaction of salicylaldehyde with the plant amino acids l-2-amino-3-methylaminopropanoic acid (l-MeDAP), dl-2,4-diaminobutanoic acid (dl-DAB) and dl-2,3-diaminopropanoic acid (dl-DAP). The reaction of salicylaldehyde with l-MeDAP gave only the 2- (α-) product. The reaction of salicylaldehyde with dl-DAB or with dl-DAP produced, at equilibrium, predominately the 4- (ω-) or 3- (β-) species. X-ray single-crystal structures were determined for two compounds.
