Extraction of zinc and cadmium with capric acid: Coextraction of sodium ion

Partition of zinc and cadmium was carried out at 25°C in a system water and benzene containing capric acid in 0·1–2·0 M. Radiometry, flamephotometry and others have given evidence for the extractability of sodium caprate and its coextraction with the zinc family metals. Thus the following reaction scheme is generally assumed in the extraction of M: where Kjx(m) refers to the extraction constant (Kjx(0) is abbreviated to Kjx). Under the experimental conditions three monomeric sodium caprates were found to coexist in the organic phase: NaR3HR (log K13 = −8·28 ± 0·10), NaR5HR (log K15 = −7·22 ± 0·05) and NaR7HR (log K17 = −7·64 ± 0·10). Zinc is extracted as monomer, always accompanied by sodium: ZnNaR35HR (log K15(1) = −13·86 ± 0·05). Cadmium is extracted in a variety of chemical forms: CdR24HR (log K14 = −9·43 ± 0·05), CdNaR35HR (log K15(1) = 14·00 ± 0·10), CdNaR37HR (log K17(1) = −13·8 ± 0·3), dimeric and trimeric caprates. The ionic strength was 0·10 in NaClO4.
