Photolyses of the cis and trans square planar complexes of dichlorobis(triethylphosphine)platinum(II) in methanol have been studied using incident light at 254, 313 and 365 nm. The quantum yield of trans to cis conversion (ΦT→C) is unity for degassed solutions and 0.13 in the presence of oxygen. The yield of cis to trans conversion ΦC→T) is about 0.09 and is not affected by oxygen. 1,3-Pentadiene quenches the trans to cis conversion and the results can be fitted to a Stern-Volmer plot. It is proposed that rapid radiationless transitions take place following excitation to a charge transfer state or an upper ligand field state and isomerization originates from low-lying states.
