  • Chapter 6 - Wildlife Toxicity Assessment for 2,4-Dinitrotoluene (cas 121-14-2) and 2,6-Dinitrotoluene

  • Add time:09/08/2019    Source:sciencedirect.com

This chapter presents the wildlife toxicity assessment (WTA) for 2,4- and 2,6-dinitrotoluene (DNT), primary products in propellants and by-products in the manufacture of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). Acute, subchronic, and chronic studies were available, representing three mammalian species in two orders for oral exposure to DNTs. The two isomers demonstrated similar toxic effects. Effects of subchronic and chronic exposure included decreased survival, body weight and food consumption, anemia, hepatocellular dysplasia, kidney tumors in mice, neuromuscular effects in dogs, ovarian atrophy in mice, and decreased spermatogenesis and testicular atrophy. Subchronic avian studies conducted in a single species for both isomers demonstrated effects on the kidney coincident with altered plasma chemistry and histology. Amphibian data were limited to a single acute study in which a Lethal Dose50 (LD50) of 1,098 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) was determined for both isomers. In reptiles, a single subchronic study for 2,4-DNT demonstrated weight loss, decreased feed consumption, and effects on the kidney.
