The effect of hexadecyl dithiocarbamate on phosphate coatings on mild steel was studied using an optimized phosphating bath. The coating characteristics were evaluated and compared with chromic acid sealing. The inclusion of hexadecyl dithiocarbamate in the phosphating bath resulted in film formation and thereby reduced the porosity and hygroscopicity of the coating and improved its corrosion resistance.
