Cyanidation, a process used for over a century to extract gold from free milling ores, is so effective that it can economically treat low-grade ores (0.5 g/t Au). The concentration of cyanide added to dissolve gold is much higher than the stoichiometric requirement because of various interferences. The occurrence and composition of the gold and the mineralogical composition of the ore dictate the leaching conditions. This chapter presents an update on the basic aspects of cyanidation of gold (chemistry, leaching kinetics and mechanisms), the effect of sulphide minerals (pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, realgar and stibnite) on cyanidation, the mechanisms related to passivation of gold by metal sulphides and the control strategies for cyanide, oxygen and lead nitrate. Snapshots of case studies on leaching of sulphide-bearing ores and ultrafine-flotation concentrates are also discussed.
