The carcinogenicity of POTASSIUM METABISULFITE (cas 16731-55-8) was examined in ICRJCL mice. Experimental animals were divided into three groups: Group I, 50 male and 50 female mice, received a 1% potassium metabisulfite solution in distilled water for 24 months. Group II, 50 male and 50 female mice, received a 2% potassium metabisulfite solution, the maximum tolerated dose determined by a subacute toxicity test. Group III, 50 male and 50 female mice, was administered distilled water alone and served as control. There was no significant difference in tumor incidence between the two experimental groups and the control group. The results obtained in the present study suggest that potassium metabisulfite is not carcinogenic, at least in mice.
