Two complexes of 4,5-bis(methylthio)-1,3-dithiole-2-thione (C5H6S5), C5H6S5CuI (1) and (C5H6S5)2PdI2 (2), have been synthesized and characterized crystallographically. They are assembled into ribbon structures by coordination bonds and S⋯S contacts. There are very short S⋯S contacts (3.268 Å) between the ribbons of complex 1. The contacts are arranged parallel to the heterocycle plane with one C–S⋯S–C grouping close to linear. The results of the synthetic reactions and crystal structures indicate that the planar coordination of the thiocarbonyl sulfur with Pd(II) is more efficient than the tetrahedral coordination of Cu(I) and the preferential coordination site to Cu(I) and Pd(II) is the S in thiocarbonyl group not the methylthio group.
