Free radicals from the oxidation of 4-Aminocatechol (cas 13047-04-6). Identification and structural dynamics using ESR spectroscopy

Free radicals have been generated by the one-electron oxidation of the nephrotoxin 4-aminocatechol in aqueous solutions and aqueous solvent mixtures. Both autoxidation and photo-oxidation give rise to characteristic ESR spectra. Spectral analyses using computer simulation of spectra together with the effects of selective deuteration and metal-ion complexation are consistent with the spectra of the 4-amino-1,2-benzosemiquinone radical. Effects of temperature and solvent on spectral features and magnetic parameters are accounted for in terms of restricted rotation and selective solvation of the amino group.
