The crystal and molecular structure of a complex formed by guanidine hydrochloride and glycylglycine, [C(NH2)3]Cl · C4N2O3H8

The title substance was prepared and studied to gain some insight into the structural basis for the well-known action of guanidinium salts as denaturation agents. The crystal structure has been determined from three-dimensional diffractometer X-ray data using Cu Kα radiation and refined by the least squares method to convergence at R = 0.054. The crystals are orthorhombic, and belong to space group P212121, with cell dimensions of a = 14.603 Å, b = 15.025 Å, c = 4.775 Å, Z = 4. The components are held together by hydrogen bonds between guanidine hydrochloride and the carboxyl group of the glycylglycine, whereas peptide-peptide (CO ⋯ HN) hydrogen bonds link the glycylglycine molecules together to form a pleated sheet structure.
