The morphology of poly(Gly-Ala-Glu(OEt))

This paper concerns a structural and morphological investigation of poly(Gly-Ala-Glu(OEt)). Under the conditions studied, poly(Gly-Ala-Glu(OEt)) exists in one conformation whose X-ray pattern is that of a β-sheet and can be satisfactorily indexed with monoclinic or orthogonal unit cells. Electron microscopy reveals fibers or ribbons from several solvent treatments, and oriented electron diffraction reveals the molecular chain axis is normal to the fiber axis, identifying the conformation as cross β. The fold period of the fibers are of the order of 60 Å and chain folding has been deduced.
